To compliment our existing range of services, Powerhose Technical have the abilities and facilities to perform Helium Leak Testing using a Mass Spectrometer.

WHY TEST WITH HELIUM?

Helium is extremely rare in the atmosphere, therefore it makes it easier to find leaks.
It is inert, therefore, safe to test with
Due to its small molecular size, it is very effective in testing, enabling it to penetrate tiny holes that other testing fluids may not be able to.

HOW WE PERFORM OUR TESTING....

VACUUM TESTING

The tested Part / Vessel is connected to a Mass spectrometer machine which is also connected to a vacuum pump. The part is then subjected to the required vacuum to perform the test. Once the Mass Spectrometer has created a vacuum inside the part, helium gas is sprayed all around the test piece and if the are any leaks in the part at all the vacuum will suck the helium in and send it to the MS to give a leak rate. (Example of leak rate – 1.2 x 10-4 mbl/s)

All our stainless Steel high purity hoses / Swagelok Alternative hoses are tested to a minimum leak rate of 1 x 10-7 mbl/s.

Once the part is tested and passed, we purge the parts with Nitrogen gas to remove any remaining helium left in the vessel

HELIUM SNIFFER TESTING

This is slightly different to the test above but the principles remain the same. The tested part / vessel is connected directly to helium supply and is pressurized to the desired pressure usually determined by the customer.

A sniffer probe is connected to the MS and used to sniff any helium leaking through the pressurized test piece. this gives a leak rate which can be recorded.

The helium is then vented from the test piece and Nitrogen is used to clear out any remaining helium.
